Privacy Policy
Last updated 2026-10-12
VinoEarth is made by Pine Creative Inc. ("we"). This policy covers the VinoEarth apps for iPhone and Android, the web app and this website. In short: your journal stays on your device unless you choose to sign in. An account is optional, we don't sell data, and we don't use advertising or analytics trackers.
What stays on your device
Your wines, encounters, notes, the people you list, ratings, label photos and places are stored on your device (in the app's local storage). Without an account, we can't see them. Label photos stay on the device that took them, even with an account. Backups you export are files you control.
What leaves your device, and why
A few features need outside services. They receive only what the feature needs:
| Service | What is sent | When, and why |
|---|---|---|
| OpenStreetMap Nominatim | Your device's location coordinates, precise enough to find the venue (and, like any web request, your IP address) | When you add a wine and allow location, to turn the coordinates into a place name such as "Ginza, Tokyo". |
| OpenStreetMap Nominatim | The region and country you type for a wine, such as "Margaux, France" (and your IP address) | When you add or edit a wine, to place its region on the globe. Official appellations and well-known wine regions are placed on the device, without asking. |
| Macrostrat (University of Wisconsin–Madison) | The vineyard's coordinates | When you open a wine, to show the geology beneath its vineyard. |
| Open-Meteo | The vineyard's coordinates and the vintage year | When you open a wine, to show that year's growing-season weather. |
| Wikidata and Wikipedia (Wikimedia Foundation) | The producer's name (and your IP address) | When you open a wine, to show sourced facts about the estate: its Wikipedia summary, founding year and website. |
| Google Fonts | Your IP address and browser details | To load the typefaces the app and this site use. |
| Vercel (our web host) | Standard request logs, including IP address | When you use the web app or this website, to serve pages and keep the service secure. |
These requests never include your notes, the people you were with, ratings or photos. Location is used only while you are adding a wine, never in the background, and you can always type a place instead.
Label reading
When you photograph a label, the app can read it for you. The first time, it asks before sending anything; you can always type the wine in instead. If you agree:
- The label photo goes to our label-reading service (hosted with Supabase in the United States), which sends it to Anthropic's Claude to name the wine, its region and where it grew. We don't store the photo. Anthropic processes it on our behalf, does not use it to train its models, anddeletes it within 30 days. The answer comes back to your device and is kept only there.
- An anonymous ID and scan counts. To count free scans (15 a month), the app creates an anonymous session: a random ID with no name, email or contact details. We keep the ID and its monthly scan count, and delete both after 12 months without use. To stop abuse we also count scans per network per day, using a keyed hash of your IP address (never the address itself), kept for 30 days. Our backend provider (Supabase) keeps security logs that include IP addresses for a limited time. Deleting the app removes the session from your device; the ID on our side is deleted after 12 months, or sooner if you ask us.
If you sign in
Signing in is optional. You sign in with your Google account or with a one-time code we email you. If you do, we receive your email address (and, with Google, your name), and we store your journal (wines, encounters, notes, the names of people you list, ratings and places, but not label photos) in our database, hosted with Supabase in the United States and linked to your account. We use it only to show it back to you on your devices and to keep a backup. It is protected so that only your account can read it, and we don't read, sell or share it. The anonymous scan session described above becomes your account, so your scan allowance carries over. Signing out keeps your journal in your account; the next person to sign in on the same device starts with an empty journal.
Codes are sent through our email delivery provider, which handles your email address only to deliver the message. We don't send marketing email.
Inviting friends
If you invite friends to open a bottle together, we store the invitation: the bottle (producer, name, vintage, style and region), the date and time, the place and note you typed, your name (from your Google account, if you used one), and the email addresses you invited. Only you and the people you invited can see it, and each guest sees only their own answer (yes, maybe or no); you see everyone's. Nothing else from your journal is shared. Cancelling an invitation deletes it, and deleting your account deletes the invitations you sent. We don't send email to your friends; you tell them yourself, for example with the message the app helps you write. Adding an evening to your calendar creates the event on your own device or in your own Google Calendar; we don't connect to your calendar.
Sharing
Nothing is shared unless you choose to share it, for example by sending a postcard of an encounter or inviting friends to a bottle. Each encounter is private by default.
Deleting your data
- Delete a single moment: open the wine → Edit → Delete this moment.
- Delete everything on this device: Friends → Your journal → Delete everything on this device. If you are signed in, your account's copy stays and comes back when you sign in again.
- Uninstalling the app (or clearing the site's data in your browser) removes the journal from that device.
- Delete your account and the copy we hold: email us at the address below and we will delete it within 30 days.
Without an account, we hold no copy of your journal, so there is nothing for us to delete on our side.
Age
VinoEarth is about wine and is intended only for adults of legal drinking age where they live.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR, the UK GDPR, California law or Japan's Act on the Protection of Personal Information), you may have rights to access, correct, delete or object to the processing of personal data. Since your journal is on your device, you can exercise most of these directly in the app; for your account's copy, contact us. For anything else, contact us.
Changes
We will post changes here and update the date above. If a change affects how your data leaves your device, we will tell you in the app before it takes effect.
